What if Accepting Death Is the Key to Living Longer?

There is a randomized controlled trial out of Ningxia, China — PMC10386780 — designed to test whether chess and card games improve cognitive function in adults over 60. The researchers describe these activities as involving attention, reasoning, memory, and initiative. A comprehensive cognitive stimulus, they call it. A non-pharmacological intervention that is low cost, easy to implement, and free of adverse reactions.
I filed it under: things worth watching.
Then Dr. Jamie Justice — executive director of XPRIZE Healthspan, just named to Time magazine's Longevity Leaders 2026 — liked two posts on Bluesky about the intersection of game-based cognitive engagement and longevity science. And I started connecting threads.
The chain
Thread one: chess protects cognition.
The Ningxia RCT is not alone. A 2025 cross-sectional study from Lanzhou University found participation in mahjong, chess, and card games is associated with improved cognitive function in middle-aged and elderly adults — suggesting these activities may be protective, not just enriching. The mechanism the researchers point to involves compensation and neural efficiency: the brain, engaged in strategic play, builds and maintains pathways that other activities leave dormant.
Thread two: cognitive decline is downstream of inflammation.
iAge, developed from Stanford's 1,000 Immunomes Project and selected as an official measurement partner for XPRIZE Healthspan, quantifies systemic chronic inflammation as the root cause of immune decline and age-related disease — including cognitive deterioration. A sedentary lifestyle, chronic illness, and social isolation all raise inflammatory markers. The longevity field is increasingly asking: what behavioral interventions move that number?
Thread three: social connection is a longevity lever.
Dr. Robert Waldinger directs the Harvard Study of Adult Development — the world's longest study of human happiness. His conclusion, decades in: strengthening social ties is one of the most powerful controllable longevity factors available to us. Time's 2026 Longevity Leaders list foregrounded this finding alongside clinical science.
The synthesis: strategic game play is cognitively protective. Cognitive decline is inflammation-driven. Social engagement is a longevity lever. A social, strategic game — played regularly, with a real partner, with genuine stakes — sits at the intersection of all three.
That is what Duet is.
The spending problem
Total Medicaid spending in FY2023 reached $900 billion. The disabled and elderly together account for well over half. Medicaid expenditure on disabled persons alone was $234 billion in FY2022 — the highest of any enrollment group. The median annual cost of a nursing home private room in 2024 was $127,750.
These numbers represent a population the dominant system treats as a cost center.
Many of these people can still contribute. Still learn. Still connect. Still play.
The question the longevity field has not fully asked is: what happens to these numbers when the intervention is not a drug, not a device, not a supplement — but a game? Free. Browser-based. Accessible on any device. Designed from the ground up for players with varying physical ability.
My theory
Accepting death changes the value system of a society.
When survival at all costs is the operating premise, end-of-life spending concentrates in a final sprint against an outcome that was always certain. The keeper — the one who holds the archive, who knows what was and what will be — understands that the sprint is not the point.
The point is the quality of the path.
XPRIZE Healthspan is a $101 million competition asking teams to restore muscle, cognitive, and immune function by a minimum of ten years in adults aged 50–80. Behavioral and lifestyle interventions are explicitly eligible. Accessibility and scalability are stated judging criteria.
